Greetings to
all. This is my first posting to the web
site. I am delighted to be able to
share some information about my ties to Czernowitz
and to have the opportunity to learn from you about the city’s Jewish
past.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

My connection to Czernowitz
is through the Mordechai GERSTEIN family (originally of Zhvanets,
3km East of Khotin) and through the REINES family. Here are the links. My grandmother, Kreindel
(Katie) REINES ACKERMAN (1896-1975) was the daughter of Tema-Riva
GERSTEIN and the granddaughter of Mordechai GERSTEIN (1820-1904), the family
patriarch. A short history produced
by the <st1:Street><st1:address>Mordechai
 GERSTEIN Family Circle</st1:address></st1:Street> (a New York-based landsmanschaften) makes
reference to the family having ties to the towns of Zhvanets,
Novosellitsia, Czernowitz
and Khotin.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

My grandmother Katie REINES ACKERMAN had a
brother, Yosef REINES. His wife was Rivka. Yosef died in
1942 and was buried in Czernowitz. Rivka survived
the war and died in the late 1950s. After months of searching, a wonderful
friend in Czernowitz was able to locate Yosef and Rivka’s graves in
the Czernowitz. For years our family wondered what
happened to him. His last letter in
1939 describes the worsening political situation in the region. He refused to
follow the other family members to American because he was unwilling to leave
his elderly parents behind. All we know of Rivka
is that after the war she lived in the town of <st1:City><st1:place>Shilovitz</st1:place></st1:City> not far from Czernowitz. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

I am looking for help with several
research lines.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

First, I would like to identify any other
REINES family members that trace their roots to this region. I already have found a large number with
connections to Novosellitsa, just down the road from Czernowitz on the former border with <st1:place>Bessarabia</st1:place>. I am eager, however,
to discover a connection between our two family lines. Are their other REINES graves in
CZERNOWITZ or the surrounding towns? Does anyone have information on this
family? Its origins? Other living
relations?<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Second, I am eager to locate two male
children that belonged to Rivka REINES. They may have been adopted. In any case, it is our understanding
that they were sent to <st1:country-region><st1:place>Israel</st1:place></st1:country-region> probably in the 1950s.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Third, I am eager to locate any ancestors
of Mordechai GERSTEIN. There are a
large number of his descendents in the <st1:country-region><st1:place>United States</st1:place></st1:country-region>. We would like to know
the connection which Mordechai GERSTEIN had to the specific towns mentioned
above: Zhvanets, Czernowitz,
Novosellitsia and Khotin. And<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Fourth, I am trying to locate the town of <st1:City><st1:place>Kishkowitcy</st1:place></st1:City>. I am told it is a village 15 kms from Khotin, the <st1:City><st1:place>Chernovtsy</st1:place></st1:City> region. Does anyone
have information on this village?
The ACKERMAN portion of my family came from here, but I have been unsuccessful
in locating any data on the village.<o:p></o:p>
