<P class=MsoNormal ><SPAN ><FONT size=2>You wrote
recently to the Information Center regarding a prayer book which belonged to
Rabbi Israel Friedman, the Rabbi of Ruzhin. The Israel Museum have a
prayer book <EM>siddur </EM>in the Collections which belonged to Rabbi Friedman
(ref. 180/53) <FONT face=Arial size=2>Details were published in "Jewish
Masterpieces from the Israel Museum" ed. Iris Fishof 1994 p. 64-65</FONT></P>
<FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT></FONT></SPAN>
<P class=MsoNormal ><SPAN ><FONT size=2>The personal
<I>siddur</I> (prayerbook) contains daily, Shabbat and festival prayers.
Itincludes a Rosh Hashanah <I>mahzor</I> (festival prayerbook), a Passover
<I>haggadah</I> and the<I></I> Sayings of the Fathers (<I>Pirkei
Avot</I>). Hand written in square Ashkenazi script, the text covers a small part
of the page, leaving relatively wide margins for illuminations and
illustrations. The <I>siddur</I> is decorated with initial-word panels, some of
which are accompanied by thick border decorations with foliage and animal
motifs</FONT>. <FONT size=2>As the manuscript has no scribal colophon, its exact
date and place of origin are unknown. It is assumed (based on textual and
stylistic peculiarities) that it was written and used in Eastern Europe, in the
vicinity of Krakow, possibly Poland, sometime between 1480 and 1500. When the
siddur was acquired in 1951 by the Bezalel National Art Museum, it was known to
have been in the possession of the great Hasidic leader, Rabbi Israel Friedman
(d.1850) of Ruzhin, located southeast of Kiev. Two inscriptions in the siddur
reveal that at some time the siddur belonged to the Hasidic leader Avraham Dov
of Ovruch, who lived in Safed (Israel) and who had survived the 1837 earthquake
while praying in a synagogue which was destroyed, indicated that the
<EM>siddur</EM> originated in Europe, and at some time made its way to Eretz
Israel, and was again returned to Europe before being acquired by the
Museum.</FONT></SPAN></P>
