Greetings again Czernowitzers!
A new section has been added to the website; it's called
'Downloads', and it's accessible from the home page. As the name
implies, it's a download directory that contains a list of file
names. Some of these files will be visible by your browser and
some may not (not all browsers are created equal). However, you
should be able to download the files by right clicking on the
file name.
Now, what's there at present?
1. Simon Kreindler's spreadsheet of the names and addresses of
those family members that lived in Czernowitz. This was (is)
spreadsheet #1. If you happen to have Excel or Works on your
computer, you can probably open this spreadsheet right from your
browser. Or, you can right click on the filename and download it.
The filename is 'czstreetaddr.xls'. But what if you don't have
Excel? Fear not, you can left click on 'czstreetaddr.htm' and
view the contents quite nicely. These two files will be updated
as Simon gets more information to put out. I'll let you know when
the updates are posted.
If you have comments about the spreadsheet, that are content
related, send them to Simon at: <simonkreindler_at_sympatico.ca> .
If you have problems accessing the files, send your comments to
me: <romers_at_shaw.ca>. So, that takes care of two files.
2. I have been working on a streetmap of Czernowitz from the
Romanian period (courtesy of Jewish Genealogical Society of
Ottawa), that Bruce found in with the cemetery documents. It must
have been physically very large. It is crammed with information
such as the Romanian street names vs. the German street names,
and is fully indexed. It is a grand piece of work. There are
three versions of this map, one at least should display on any
browser, it's: 'preview.jpg' It is a preview of the actual map,
so you can get an idea of the layout and what's contained
therein. It is not meant that you can read the small text; it is
a large (436k) thumbnail that Bruce made for me.
Now the real maps: The best one (in terms of resolution and
smaller file size) is called: 'totalmap.gif' and most likely
won't present itself from your browser unless you have a Mac.
However, it should be viewable from any programme that you use to
view graphics. It's 1.4 megabytes. If you download it and can't
get it to work, try the next best thing: 'totalmap.jpg' It's 1.8
megabytes, is the same size on your screen, but it'll be 1.8
megabytes on your drive. the jpeg has more 'noise' than the gif,
but it is entirely readable in every respect. If someone who
reads Romanian could find a date on the map (probably around the
official looking stamp), that would be good information.
Again, if you have problems downloading, viewing, etc., I'm your
man. Bruce and I have been checking out the maps and we think it
should be ok. But if you do have problems, I'll need a
description of your computer and what you're using to view the
file with. If you're able to veiw 'totalmap.gif' from your
browser, I would be interested in knowing what you're using.
3. Simon needs more names and addresses, so let's keep up the
good work there... send it to: <simonkreindler_at_sympatico.ca> ;
and don't forget to send your lists of families you're
researching to Anna at: <a-guy_at_canada.com>
Best regards,
jerome
