Dear All,
As was agreed previously, the program for the "2007 Bukowiner Reunion",
includes a discussion on the topic "What was Czernowitz and in particular
Jewish Czernowitz really like?"
As a member of the organizing committee for the reunion, I have undertaken
to organize this segment of the program. I would like the discussion to
start as a panel presentation by 5 - 8 participants, who in preparation for
this discussion will each research one or more of the aspects of life in
Czernowitz in the period from about 1880 till 1940. This should include
obtaining the facts about:
1. Population size and make-up.
2. Political and legal status of the Jews during the Austrian
and the Romanian period.
3. Economic data; incomes size and distribution
4. Educational data; the schools, number of students, degrees attained.
5. Cultural data; newspapers published during this period, cultural clubs
and organizations, theatre and music performances, etc.
6. Social relations between Jews and the other segments of the population
7. Social relations within the Jewish community.
Each panelist would have about 10 minutes to present his/her findings,
after which we will have a general discussion during which I hope many
participants will tell of their own memories and impressions of Czernowitz.
We could broaden the subject to include not just Czernowitz, but the whole
Bukowina. Also the list of topics to research is by no means complete and I
hope that all those interested will send their suggestions and comments.
Mostly though I hope that many of you will want to be on the panel and will
be willing to do the necessary research. The factual material is available
in many published books and at all major academic libraries.
Shabbat Shalom,
Mimi
