Dear Mr. Mazower,
The idea to commemorate the centenary of the 1908 International Yiddish
Language Conference is excellent and I am all for it.
I think it will take you some time to make the necessary preparations in
terms of historical material and lectures by people who are really competent
in this particular field. Unfortunately, most of the Czernowitzer leading
scholars are not alive any more. So, a lot of "search and research" will be
needed and I sincerely wish you good luck.
To your question regarding the the Concert Hall and the Ukrainian National
House - I participated at the 2006 Reunion in Czernowitz last May, as a
veteran Czernowitzer, and I found very easily the "Musikverein Konzerthalle"
on the former Mehlplatz (Rudolfsplatz). At present, the building looks nice
and well renovated; I could not enter into the Concert Hall. While it is
true that most of the discussions were held in the Ukrainian National House
(and not in the Jüdisches Nationalhaus), I do not remember such national
house during all my first 18 years of life in Czernowitz. The fact that Dr.
Benno Straucher, at that time the very authoritative leader of the Jewish
Community, did not agree that the discussions/debates of the International
Conference be held in the just brand new National house building, is still
not 100% clear, according to my sources of information. Furthermore, I am
not sure whether even the official opening of the International Conference
took place there.
Best regards, Abraham Kogan
