Dear Jerry,
I was very moved by your description of the massacre by the Romanian =
gendarmes of the Jewish insane at the Cariera de Piatra on the Bug in =
1942. Sadly, but not unexpectedly, it provided closure to events I =
witnessed 64 years ago.
During the forties I lived in the (untere) Neuweltgasse (strada =
Marasesti). After the Romanians occupied the city in 1941, the Jewish =
patients were kicked out from the Mental Hospital. The Community =
obtained a vacant house in the Neuweltgasse where these patients were =
housed. This house was close to where I lived and we could here screams =
and other noises, especially at night. During the Spring of 1942, when =
the deportations to Transnistria resumed, I saw several horse-driven =
carts pull up at the makeshift asylum. The unfortunates were loaded onto =
the carts, some forcefully, and driven away. All these years I had =
wondered what fate awaited them, now I know.
As to the exact location of the Kultusgemeinde, I am afraid I cannot =
help you, since I don't remember it.
With best regards,
Alfred (Fred) Schneider

Dear Prof. Schneider
Maybe you could clear up matters for me about the location of the =
Kultusgemeinde in Czernowitz. As far as I remember it was located on =
Elisabethplatz (Piata Alexandrii), but some friends tell me I'm wrong.=20
Thank you
