Personal Introduction for Jerome Schatten

The Cz-L WebMeister was born in the Bronx NYC in 1937, the first child
of Emanuel Schatten (b. 1903 in Czernowitz) and Marion Cohen.

A victim of the 'progressive education' movement in the NYC school
system, Jerome grew up a functional illiterate with a healthy disrespect
for any kind of authority. A three year undistinguished career in the
U.S. military allowed Jerome to hone his drinking and carousing skills
while sharpening still further his disdain for those in positions of
power.

These deficits notwithstanding, our intrepid high school drop out
managed a Dip.Electronics Technology; a B.A.(Math); and finally an M.Ed.
degree.

Jerome has been retired for almost ten years. The last 25 working years
were spent in teaching at a large community college in Vancouver,
Canada. Before that he worked at the Princess Margaret Hospital in
Toronto (cancer research); IBM Research Labs in NY; and RCA Labs in
Princeton NJ.

His connections to Czernowitz are through his father's side of the
family. Jerome's father, Emanuel (Mac) was born in Cz, Mac's father
Abraham/Adolf, was married in Cz in 1901; Mac's gf Seinwell and his ggf
Josef, along with other Schattens are buried in the Czernowitz cemetery.

Thus, Jerome has an abiding interest in cleaning up the Czernowitz
cemetery.

Jerome's cousin Jessica Attiyeh Falikman (a list member) and Jerome have
been working together on their genealogy project for about four years
now. Much has been accomplished through the list, and much has still to
be done.

The website is one of Jerome's many hobbies and meshes nicely with other
aspects of his interests. Most importantly, his website work has allowed
him to meet a community of splendid folks and has reignited his sense of
Jewishness which had been dormant for many years.
