Genealogy is much, much more than constructing family trees - it is
about people helping people:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We all shared in the joy of the reunification of Hilda Shick (75) and
her brother, Simon Glasberg (83, a story that was on the national news
in newspapers around the world.
I think we also should share in the nachas in knowing that it was some
of friends who helped make this happen:
The story began on May 22nd, 2006 when David Shlick, grandson of
Hilda Schlick (née Glasberg), both living in Israel, wrote to Czernowitz
and Sadagora websites coordinator, Bruce Reisch, asking for his help in
contacting the Federation of Bukowina Jews in Montreal and in tracking
down one of his grandmother's brothers, Karol Weiner, living in
Montreal.
Mr. Weiner had submitted a Page of Testimony to Yad Vashem in 1999,
in memory of Hilda Glasberg, whom he was led to believe had perished
in the Holocaust. The Schlick family was originally from Czernowitz
Bukovina (now Chernivtsi, Bukovina, Ukraine) and was separated in 1941.
Bruce suggested to David that he join the Czernowitz-List:
Bruce, Geneva, NY, then contacted his cousin and fellow researcher Merle
Kastner, living in Montreal. In addition to posting David's request on
the JGS of Montreal mailing list, she checked various sources, Merle
found that Mr. Weiner was deceased. She then uncovered the name of a
relative, who told her that Mr. Weiner had a son, Dr. Eric Weiner,
living in Florida. Merle found the contact information for
Dr. Weiner and sent it to David Shlick, who immediately followed up on
this lead.
Simon Glasberg was found living near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Also helping in this search were:
Wolfgang Schaechter, Santa Clara, CA and Pascale Garber, Montreal.
Hilda and Simon and their families were reunited in Israel, and the rest
is now history.
