Some list members recently asked about available BMD and other records in
Czernowitz. According to the Routes to Roots Foundation web site (cut and
paste the following URL, which may span two or more lines in your mail reader:
http://www.rtrfoundation.org/srchresults2.asp?rbSearchBy=ExactMatch&txtTown=czernowitz&Town_Submit.x=51&Town_Submit.y=7&Town_Submit=Search&Town3=CHERNOVTSY&REGION=CHERNOVTSY
), the State Archives of the Chernovtsy Oblast, in Czernowitz, has BMD records
for most of 1841-1930, census/lists of inhabitants for 1883-1896, voter lists
for some of the years 1901-1908, Jewish community/Kahal records for 1780-1944
(!), and many other kinds of records. The LDS Church is actively microfilming
these records, I believe, after the completion of which project the records
will be available at any LDS Family History Center, but that won't be done for
years. Meanwhile, some members of this list have had succes in obtaining
records at the archives by hiring a local researcher (I hope to have such
success myself, sometime soon).

I'm not aware that anyone has had success obtaining newer records from the
civil registration office (ZAGS archive) in Czernowitz for anyone other than
their close family. According to the RTR Foundation web site, "Public access
to ZAGS documents is regulated by law, which prohibits on-site access and
research by individuals looking for multiple records for genealogical
purposes" (http://www.rtrfoundation.org/archdta6.html).
