Dear Czernowitzers,
About 30 people have so far shown interest in participating in the reunion.
We have decided on the date, name and approximate location. Members of our
list are negotiating with various hotels about group rates and price of
conference rooms, with Yad Vashem about a special exhibit, with various
public organizations, about an excursion and tree planting in the north of
Israel.
We have a list of proposals for the program and expect to receive more.
We have decided that we would agree on the program for the meeting,
then set up a committee to implement it.
But.... There are still a number of major decisions to be made
and it would be best, if ALL OF US gave these some thought and shared
our ideas and concerns.
I will list here, not necessarily in order of importance a number of
problems to which I have no answers:
1. Once we receive all the proposals for the program of the reunion,
how do we vote on these proposals?
Possibly it might be best, if each one of us, ranked them
in order of preference and those with the highest ranking would be
accepted.
2. Because there are so many things to decide upon, there will be
a lot of voting, which may overwhelm the correspondence within the list.
Please suggest an alternative means of collecting the votes.
3. Are we willing to pay honorariums to invited speakers and to
invited entertainers? If any of you have experience with such matters,
what is the accepted procedure? Also, do we invite a person and let
him or her choose what they will speak or do?
4. At the "Czernowitz Reunion 2006" the participation fee, was very low.
Everything costs more in Israel, shall we decide in advance with what
kind of fee, most people feel comfortable. This is meant as a guideline
only and shall not imply that we spend the maximum amount of money most
of us feel comfortable spending.
5. Logistics of the meeting: From what time in the morning, till what time
in the evening, do we schedule the program? Those not living or staying
in the immediate vicinity of where the meeting takes place, have to have
time to get from home to the meeting and back.
Do we want an early afternoon break?
6.In order to accommodate the wishes of as many people as possible,
and because not all of those who would like to participate are
equally fluent in Hebrew, English or German, shall we plan to have
multiple simultaneous discussions and presentations? Possibly in
various languages? Having multiple simultaneous discussions, would
give us greater flexibility, but would cost more, because of the need
to use multiple rooms.
7. I still have questions about the method of setting up a committee to
implement the decisions of those participating in the reunion. Shall we
elect the committee, or should it consist of volunteers? Few people
responded previously to this question. Could we please have more input?
I suggest the committee consist of 5 people, each person taking on
himself to be responsible for certain tasks and all differences of
opinion to be settled by a majority vote within the committee.
8. Are we agreed that the focus of the meeting shall be "The culture
of German speaking Jewish Czernowitz and Bukowina"? In effect meaning
that we do not include the culture of non-Jewish Czernowitz and Bukowina,
except as it pertains to the Jewish life and culture there. Also not
included would be the culture of Russian or Ukrainian speaking Jewish
Czernowitz and Bukowina.
9. I think that anyone who wants to participate in the reunion and is
willing to pay the fee decided upon, should be able to participate.
Please agree or disagree or qualify.
10. In my opinion, anyone making a presentation of any kind at the reunion,
should be guaranteed to have his or her copyright to the material they
are presenting kept inviolate. I do not know what the law is in Israel
in this regard. The lawyers in the Cz.-List, please inform us.
The reason this is important is: Some participants, may have the
intention of publishing the material they will present at the reunion
and would not wish others to publish it before they do.
PLEASE respond with your opinions and ideas on these issues and any others
which you consider important,
Mimi
