Dear Friends:

New information about the history of the Radauti, Bukowina, Jewish
Community is now available online. A translation of the Memoranda of
Rabbi Israel Harnik about the History of the Jewish Community of
Radauti, Romania, has just been posted on the JewishGen Yizkor book
web site.

Start here:

From this page, there is a link to the actual translated manuscript here:

This is one of several translated works listed under "R" for Radauti,
Romania, on this web page:

Fred Stambrook, Professor of History from the University of Manitoba,
Winnipeg, kindly donated his time to translate this work from German
into English. He gave an excellent presentation related to Bukowina
history at the 2002 meeting of the International Association of
Jewish Genealogical Societies in Toronto. Following his
presentation, I asked if he would be interested in translating this
unpublished history of Radauti, which I found in the files of the
Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem.
Miriam Yagur kindly agreed to complete the job by translating several
passages from Hebrew into English. Ruth Enis (one of our very kind
list members) arranged for this with Miriam earlier this year.

So, through the kindness of several individuals, this historical work
by Rabbi Harnik, the Chief Rabbi of Radauti prior to WWII, is now
available to the public.

Professor Stambrook passed away suddenly last year

and it's certainly unfortunate that he didn't live long enough to see
that the project was finally completed. In 2003, Prof. Stambrook
published an important paper (in English) on the history of Jewish
Bukovina:

Stambrook, Fred. 2003. The Golden Age of the Jews of Bukovina,
1880-1914. published by the Center for Austrian Studies, University
of Minnesota (USA). 20 pages plus appendix. Working Paper 03-2.

This paper can be downloaded as a pdf file from the following site:

http://www.cas.umn.edu/publications/papers.html

Scroll down and look for Paper 03-2. Click on the link to read the pdf.

Warmest wishes!

Bruce
