Czernowitzers....
I have had a hard drive crash yesterday which wiped out everything. I'm
reconstructing things from my backups, which takes a while. So I may not
be very responsive for a few days.
Michele Troup (our cookbook wizard) asked me to post this for her:

On a more personal note do you or any one in the group have a way to
communicate with :"Eliezer Steinbarg society". A Mr. Schkodnik and a
woman Mrs Malik work in the Jewish House. both have the same last names I
am researching. My maternal grandmother was Mary Malik (born 1903 cz )
came to canada shortly there after and her mother was Iorena Schkodnik
from CZ- we think she was born or lived in village of Rewna which is 6.5
miles from CZ, her husband came from Sadogora, for sure the family was
from around CZ. I have had no luck in finding family with this last name.
Family states Grand ma used to write to some family in the old country,
Thanks Jerome

Speaking of the cookbook, an updated version of same is now on the
website. More recipes... we need more recipes. Send 'em to Michele
directly (address above) along with comments, suggestions, praise, etc.
And speaking of the webiste, there is a new gallery of Czernowitzer
Artwork on the site -- two volumes of the artwork of Isiu Schaerf (b.1913
Cz, d.1997). Direct links:

and

I hope you enjoy these works as much as I do. We seem to have an abundance
of first and second generation Czernowitzer artists in this group. Thus, I
am going to make a special section called 'Czernowitzer Art', which will
be assessable from the Menu on the home page to house all the collections
of artwork now scattered across the site. Photographs, Paintings,
Drawings, other media -- what do you have?? Two more galleries are in the
works; one from Lilian Madfes in Uruguay (paintings, drawings, other
media), and the other 'The Streets of Czernowitz - Photographs by Edward
Tur'. An example of his work is the photo on our home page right now.
My good friend Steve Lasky (the Museum of Family History
( http://www.museumoffamilyhistory.com ) is still looking for materials
for his project 'The Jewish Presence in Czernowitz'. Steve's work is
important; it integrates and memorializes the Jewish immigrant life of our
ancestors, part of which, of course, played out in Czernowitz. In his
message to the group of 17 October, he asked for representative
correspondence between family members who once lived in Czernowitz and
their relatives and friends elsewhere. Please contact Steve if you can
help... If you haven't visited the on-line museum, just click on the link
above; it's an exciting and well done website that I'm sure you will
enjoy. Steve's email: "StevenLasky" <steve725_at_optonline.net>
Best,
jerome
