Hi Berti your email brought back my memories of the Temple

My family was not religious, but for the high holidays we had
thickets to the temple. My father purchased the tickets from the
shames his name was Potekar. He had a daughter my age,we were in the
same camp in Obodovca Transnistria, last time I saw them was in 1950
in Natania
In the 1930's until 1940 I use to go to temple on the high holidays
sit with my father downstairs while my sister was with mother in the
balcony..
The interior was very ornate lots of carvings, the light trough the
stained glass windows was beautiful. There was a choir above the
bimah.
The temple was build in the same style as the temple in
Vienna.Everybody was dressed in holiday clothes, and the temple was
filled to capacity.Rabbi Mark was not a tall man he had a well
trimmed black beard.,his sermons were in German, unfortunately he was
shot in the first days of the occupation by the SS in July 1945
In the late 1930s I use to go occasionally during summer vacation to
morning services with my neighbor my age Filiu Schwitz who was some
how religious because he went to the Hebrew school Safah Ivria which
was near the Toimbehalle in the TurkengasseThe temple was quite
empty. I use to pass almost daily in front of the temple it was a
very impressive building.
