I have also heard from experts that complete root destruction is also
injurious. When the roots die and disintegrate, stones can more
readily sink and topple. If herbicides are used, the chemicals
themselves may harm certain kinds of stones. I don't think it's as
simple as completely killing all roots. Plants will eventually
return, even if roots of the present crop are killed. I do hope,
though, that the work camp participants are seeking the advice of
those knowledgeable on cemetery preservation issues.
