My father in Czernowitz studied 348 languages and I had to quit school to captain rafts on the Prut so that I could feed the family - he was studying all the time and had no time to work - and I was only eight years old, all the while singing "Traiasca Regele in pace si onor" One of the peasants on the raft sang Alunelu, Alunelu hai la joc and he fell off and drowned holding a bottle of Tuica.
Once my dad mastered those 348 languages, including Mesopotamian, Urdu and Ethiopian, he said to me, "Sei ein gutes kind" and I was quite upset because I was fifty-two by then.
Gute nacht. Noapte buna. Bon nuit. Buenos Noches.
