Dear Cornel,
Your recent inquiry about Nowosielitza brought back memories of friends of
my family in Czernowitz.
Though I understand that you received several informative messages about
this small town in Bukowina, there may be one important detail that was
missing: Nowosielitza was probably unique in that province, if not in the
entire kingdom of Romania, having been the birthplace of a genuine British
Lord, KCMG, CB: Eric Roll, The Lord of Ipsden. Sir Eric was born in
Nowosielitza on 1 December 1907. He described his childhood there and his
life later in Czernowitz in his autobiography "Crowded Hours" (Faber and
Faber, London). He had a phenomenal career, as a civil servant, educator,
and banker (chairman and president of SG Warburg) and authored several books
(economics). He died on 5 September 2005, aged 97. There were lengthy
obituaries in The Times and Telegraph.
In 1997, while visiting the Jewish cemetery in Czernowitz, I discovered the
grave of Sir Eric's mother. In 1998 I sent him a photo of the grave and
received a very warm letter from him.
