Hi All,
Just found out that Czernowitz has a Popovici street after all.
And a nice street it is too.
The old Splenygasse from the Franz-Joseph Park to the
"Herz Jesu" Jesuit Church. The one with the green tall spire.
Then I look again and find that the name is O. Popovici.
Not our man.
Who was O.Popovici ? No idea.
What were his merits to name the Splenygasse after him ?
He must have done something, written some book , or was he
a national hero , or an olympic champion ?
Jews he did not save ,for sure, for this they don't name streets
in Czernowitz.
For saving jews ,you get a memorial plate.
This too doesn't come easy.
You must pull some strings.
Then, we don't have an agreed text.
Czernowitzers !- a word here ,a word there -
let us agree and go ahead.
It is almost 67 years since...
Popovici waited enough.
