Following is an edited version of an email I received yesterday from
Edgar Hauster. He refers to several attached files which I am unable
to forward to the list, but could make available to you on request.
Bruce
Bruce,
one month after my arrival in Radautz area I would like to send you
an update of my activities here (once more apologizing for my poor
English):
Archives Radautz, Suceava, Czernowitz
I've spent a lot of time (much more than initially scheduled) in the
a. m. archives. There are huge differences regarding the access to
the different archives, which could be described - based on my
personal experience - as follows:
Town-hall Radautz
Address: Primaria municipiului Radauti, Piata unirii nr. 2, Radauti, Romania
Working hours: on weekdays until 5 pm
Person in charge: Dragos Motriuc, registrar
Access: completely unbureaucratic
Photos: yes, but limited on personal needs
Costs: free, notwithstanding incentives
Photocopies: no
Remark: According to Romanian legislation, the registry documents
available in Radautz (see below) should have been handed over years
ago to the State Archives in Suceava; the procedure of the civil
registry office takes place in a grey legal area.
State Archives Suceava
Address: Arhivele Nationale ale Romaniei, Filiala Arhivelor Statului,
Str. Stefan cel Mare 33, Suceava, Romania
Working hours: on weekdays until 5 pm
Person in charge: Director
Access: moderate bureaucratic, appllication form is needed
Photos: yes, unlimited
Costs: RON 6,50 (USD 2,80) per day for an unlimited number of photos
Photocopies: yes, low-cost and in high quality, made by staff within 24 hours
Regional Archives Czernowitz
Address: Oblast Archive, Str. Stasiuc 20 A, Tscherniwzi, Ukraine
Working hours: on weekdays until 6 pm (1 hour break)
Person in charge: Director Dimitrie Dimitrovici Jmunduleac
Access: apparent very bureaucratic, but in fact problem-free and very
friendly, appllication letter to the Director is needed
Photos: yes, unlimited
Costs: free, notwithstanding incentives
Photocopies: no
This presumed, I decided not to force the registrar of Radautz to
allow photos of all registers. On the other hand I have inspected all
the registers and established a listing (see attached Excel
document), which indicates the availability of the registers in
Radautz and Suceava respectively. Generally speaking, the civil
registry documents of Czernowitz and Radautz from the middle of the
19th century until 1929, including the useful indexes, are complete
available and could be examined in Czernowitz and Radautz/Suceava. I
hope the a. m. data may be helpful for you and/or forum members.

Chanzie Reisch, daughter of the grocer Chaim Reisch and Chaje Lea,
born Reifler in Czernowitz
Chanzie, born in 1885, married in 1908 Salomon Hauster, the brother
of my grand father Elias Hauster. Could we be related? I would be
happy and proud to be!

Address Book Czernowitz, incl. suburbs, Radautz and Suceava
In the University of Vienna I've found the a. m. Address Book
(DSC03557), which in my personal opinion is very precious, because it
contains much more than the addresses, for example (img108, 110, 114,
116, 117):
street finder with ancient street names
locality index for the Bukowina
address book with names and professions for all a. m. towns/localities
house owners
firms and companies
professional associations
and much, much more
So I made a complete photocopy of the address book and would like to
make it available to you and/or any member of the forum.
Street Finder Radautz
I am still working on this subject, offering some incentives to the
people from Radautz.
International Congress of the Jews, originated from Romania
The Romanian Jewish Federation is organizing the a. m. Congress in
November 2008 (November, 16th - 18th in Israel and November, 19th -
21st in Romania). I have additional information in Romanian language.
Do you think, that it may be interesting for the forum members. If
so, than somebody, who speaks better English than me - no problem -
should perhaps translate the invitation letter.
Cemetery Czernowitz
From my point of view, there is no chance to find any particular
tombstone without your assistance. In the archives I've found more or
less all members of my family, I've been looking for, but no way on
the cemetery. After summerizing the results of my trip, I will
contact you again, asking you for your kind assistance in identifying
some particular tombstones.
Synagogue Radautz
Ten days ago, Radautz got - after 16 years - a new mayor. The new
political situation has to be sorted out, so no news for the moment.
Perhaps I'll meet the new mayor end of next week.
Sucevita
You think, I've been working all the day long? Wrong! From this
wonderful old farm house (DSC03610), equipped with high-tec (WLAN,
etc), we, i. e. my son, a friend of mine and me (DSC04216, S73F0089,
95), started several adventure atv tours in the neighbourhood.
So, dear Bruce, it's one o'clock in the night and I wouldn't like to
tax your patience too much, but on the other hand I wanted to let you
know the preliminary results of my trip.
Once again, I would like to point out my appreciation for your
activities. Please feel free to use any data of this mail for you
and/or members of the forum.
My very best regards to you and your (who knows, our) family!
