Cornel and All,
Yad Vashem says 20,000
Fundul Moldovei says 24,000
We say 19,600
Who is right ? We will never now. All of the above and none.
Popovici got from Antonescu the approval of 20,000 but because of
short time available he didn't issue more than 19,600.
On the other hand some jews stayed in Cz. without permits.
We are not dealing with precise numbers .
Ther was what we call in Hebrew a big " Bardak"(mess) in Cz in 1941.
Now some city clerk starts playing historian and wants to put history
right :
"Those cheating Jews want to " hereinganwenen " 400 more Jews into
the plate.
To make the number more impressing. "
So he says 19600 ? Let it be !
Hardy
