Dear Czernowitzers,
The photographer Shani Bar-On and I are currently working on a new
photo/text-book and exhibition about the Jewish Bucovina. The
exhibition and the book will be bilingual in German and in English.
The book will be published next spring and the traveling exhibition
will be opened first in Vienna, Austria. We are also organizing
Holocaust-Education Workshops for Highschools in Austria. The aim of our
project is to preserve the heritage of the Jewish Bucovina for future
generations.
Oral-History Interviews:
In order to publish the book we are looking for Bucovina Jews (who
were born there) who are either living in Israel, the Bucovina,
Germany or Austria and who are willing to be interviewed for our
project.
We are right now especially looking for people in Israel who would
have time for an Oral-History Interview next week. Shani and I are
traveling to Israel from June 18 to June 26 and could come to your
place everywhere in Israel.
We will be coming to Israel a second time to conduct further
interviews (probably in September or October).
There might be also the possibility of a trip to the United States in
November but since our funds are limited we don't know yet if we will
be able to interview people in the United States & Canada.
A few more words about us: I am a descendant of Bucovina Jews from
Radautz, Putna and Czernowitz. I was born in Vienna in 1986. I used to
work for the Leo Baeck Institute New York were I was responsible for
the "Austrian Heritage Collection", an oral-history interview project
about Austrian-Jewish Immigrants in the United States. These days I am
working as a freelance journalist for a Jewish newspaper in Berlin.
Shani Bar-On is a photographer from Israel. Her family came originally
from the Czech Republic and Romania. She studied photography at the
Ben Gurion University of the Negev and worked on various projects in
Israel, Europe and North America. We met in New York and got married
in October 2008 and soon after moved to Berlin.
If you live in Israel (or know someone who lives in Israel) and would
like to participate in our Oral-History Interview Project then please
feel free to contact us anytime. Probably the best way to reach us is
by email or telephone. We can also call you back if you send us your
number.
I tried to add our project schedule to this email. But i think it is not
possible to send an attachment through the list. Everybody who is
interested in our project can just email me and I will be happy to send
you all the details of our project to your personal email.
All the best from Berlin & we hope to see you soon,
Emil Rennert & Shani Bar-On
