Czernowitzers...

I have changed the focus somewhat of the 'Cemeteries of Bukovina,
Galicia and Romania' section, broadening it to include also photos of
the towns that once housed Jewish populations before the Holocaust.
It's been renamed "Cemeteries & Towns - Photo Albums from Bukovina,
Galicia & Romania".

It seems only natural to include towns within a 100 mile radius of the
big city of Czernowitz since so many of our ancestors came from these
outlying stetlach -- some of which had no cemeteries of their own. My
own family, for example, had roots in Podhajce Galicia -- they later
ended up in Czernowitz for several generations.

Hannalore Condiescu has presented us with photographs of the town of
Putna Romania (mentioned in Bruce's recent post of a 1916 newspaper
article from the NYT). Hannalore's family owned an inn in Putna, which
had a very small Jewish population. You can see her Album by selecting
from the Menu: "Cemeteries & Towns - Photo Albums..." -> Putna from
the page you land on. Or directly:
<http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/czernowitz11/putna/index.html>

Edgar Hauster, the fearless photographer and blogger of our Jewish
past, braved the backwater roads of rural Ukraine in a borrowed SUV to
photograph the town and cemetery of Podhajce (Galicia). This was a
personal favour -- thank you Edgar! He reports that compared to most,
the cemetery at Podhajce is in good condition. How is this so? Is it
only the goats holding back the forest or is it something/someone
else? The words on the monument honouring those murdered by the Nazis
curdles the blood to this day. Menu -> 'Cemeteries & Towns..... ' ->
'Podhajce II' will get you to the album. Directly:

Two more interesting Prut pictures have been added -- Another from
Irene Fishler (7/27) and one from Yosi Eshet (27/27). Menu: -> 'Pre
1945 Cz. Photographs....' -> 'Prut Related Photos... ' or directly:

Best,
jerome
