Whores must have been more common, even in Czernowitz than we proud
inhabitants would have liked to admit. In the winter of 1941 - 42, we
moved in with family friends in an apartment house close to the
southern edge of the Volksgarten.
On the lower floor of the building lived two young Romanian women, who
to my four year old eyes were very beautiful, very well dressed, took
me and my five year old friend for walks, bought us candy and taught us
Romanian.
One day, they painted my fingernails and my lips. I came home delighted,
only to get a spanking from my uncle who yelled: I told you not to go
to the "Freudenmaedchen" (young women of joy in literal translation).
At a time when there was no joy for Jewish children, I four year old,
thought that my uncle was completely unreasonable, just like most adults.
