Hello friends,
Mimi, I disagree, as far as I am concerned, I don't at all mind giving
the persons who help me find a grave in the cemetery jungle a few
dollars.And obviously others
don't mind either. I wouldn't like to have to make an extra dollar this
way, considering how much poverty there still is around.
And comparing the organization of the cemetery to Western standards is
a bit unrealistic. However, the principle is correct and should be applied.
If the cemetery belongs to the city and is a national monument, then it
is up to the city to see that it is properly kept in all corners, and
that visitors can
easily access the graves. If not, one has to ask for help, and anyone
coming to Czernowitz from the West probably can affort the modest
"fees". If Yuri asked for
an excessive fee, then one could either bargain or refuse. I believe
someone was bargaining with him when I passed them one day. There was
also a younger
man there offering his services.
But as we now hear from Cornel, things have improved and there is an
"official" fee in a real office.
It is incredible that the city does nothing to clear the cemetery,
especially as there are probably lots of unemployed persons there who
would like to earn some, if
little, money by doing this work. Just look at the Orthodox cemetery
just opposite the Jewish one, it is really tidy and well-kept. It is of
course smaller and relatives
of the deceased still visit and take care.
By the way, I believe that in the past money for clearing the Jewish
cemetery has come from all sorts of Western Jewish sources. In the movie
"Herr Zwilling und Frau Zuckermann" there is a scene in the cemetery
showing "Maria" and probably her husband collecting dry branches and
burning them. We don't know who paid them for this.
