Dear Joel Aloni,
The first time I visited Czernowitz was in 1999, together with my mother
who returned after ca. 55 years. The house of my grand-father is exactly
next door
to this Schul - on the photo you sent - the iron gate on the left is the
entrance. The Schul belonged to the city of course (!), and there was a
shield at the front saying that inside there was some kind of
electricity works, in Russian of course, which I can read but not
understand too well. My uncle, who lives in Florida told me about it and
of the name.
. It looked beautiful even as it was, the walls in a dire state, but
the two rosette windows at the front still spoke of past glory.
At that time there was no wall between the house next door, next time I
visited a wall had been set up. Now I see that one of the windows has
probably been torn down or fallen apart - I do hope they can restore it.
It looks pitiful now.
Last year we heard that some Jewish organization from America is in
charge and (maybe Lubawitcher) restoring it. Maybe one of our helpful
members of the List, (Hardy Breier?) who has some connections in
Czernowitz, can find out more.
With kind regards,
Gabriele Weissmann
