Hardy, and all,
We (the volunteer group) were told last summer that the mass grave
held the remains of 900 Jews. The chainsaw man's wife told Pedro, a
member of our group, that she has a friend, who was a child at the
time, and a witness to the event. The woman remembers the earth
moving for several days after the grave was filled, because some
people were still alive.
I assume this is the space you are talking about. I don't have the
cemetery map handy, but if you are at the front, facing toward the
back, it was near the right edge of the cemetery, perhaps a third of
the way back from the front. I did have a hard time imagining that
space holding that many bodies, and wondered about that. I am almost
positve that the marker stated that it was Jews massacred there. I
am sure I could get some more info from Pedro.
I am hoping that Katya, another member of the volunteer group who
will be working on her thesis on the cemetery, and who speaks
Ukrainian, will be able to research this matter further this summer.
