Patricia,

I suggest that you start by checking the geography. To flee from
Russia to the Austrian Crownland of Bukovina, of which Czernowitz was
the capital, the immigrants needed only to cross the River Prut. I
do not see any reason why he should cross the Carpathian mountains,
which lie between Romania proper (former principality of
Transylvania) and Hungary.

My GGF Aron Dovid Barak and his family did that in 1860, when at age
17, he received a draft notice from the Czar's army. The whole
family fled from Khotin, Bessarabia to Storozynetz in Bukovina. Some
other Baraks, presumably his uncles or cousins, went to Detroit, MI.

As for going to Canada, the least expensive ticket on a ship from
northern Europe was from the North Sea or Baltic ports to Halifax.
My Dinovitzer cousins from Dinovitz near Kamenets-Pololsky arrived
in Halifax and settled in Chicoutemi, Quebec, where they opened a
general store. Again, please check your geography; Mimico is not in
Quebec at all, but in Ontario near York and Toronto.

As for travel to Antwerp -- I would bet on rail. It is possible your
hero was a fusgeyer (a goer on foot) but by 1906, the railroads were
well established, and especially if he had a patron to buy him a
ticket to the boat, they would have provided a train ticket. My
maternal grandmother, Golda Weininger took the train from Bucharest
to Vienna, and from there to Paris and Cherbourg in 1920.

As for the question about the "famous Jewish Architect" that is
interesting, and I will keep my eyes open.

By the way, I am a fellow Nutmegger / Tollgate Stater /
Connecticutian who grew up if Fairfield.
