Hardy's listing had two errors, Berti's was correct but had two omissions:
the REGAL cinema on the Herrengasse, opposite the Cafe l'Europe (Dr.
Rothgasse) and the TERA, on the Ringplatz next to the Hotel Schwarzer Adler.
The latter was the ultimate Flohkino (fleahouse) and the favorite hangout
for couples who appreciated the darkness, not only because it improved the
visual quality of the image on the screen. During the first Soviet period,
the REGAL (name was changed) offered a "Muzik Xhol" program with the movie.
I thought of it when, a few years later, I was treated to the traditional
initiation for new immigrants at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The TERA
and all cinemas for that matter were not the only favorite venues for
couples, the Volksgarten had the notorious Seufzerallee; a scientific study
claimed that much of the population of Cz. had originated in the
Seufzerallee.
I can clarify some events leading to the destruction of the Postgasse and
the houses on the Ringplatz where the Koenig store was located: it was blown
up by the
Soviets before they retreated in July 1941. The main reason for their
action: when the war started, the population was ordered to surrender all
radio receivers which were stored in the former Bursa (Getreideboerse), on
the left side of the Postgasse (coming from the Ringplatz), and that
building was blown up. It is also possible that the main Post Office which
was
close to the Musikvereingasse was also blown up.
Regards to all,
Fred Schneider
