The Christian cemetery is currently in very much better shape than the
Jewish one. Between August of 2008 and April of 2009 a lot of work was done
at the Christian cemetery. This work was paid for by private means. Who
actually contributed or raised the money, I do not know. Even before, the
Christian cemetery was in much better shape than the Jewish one, but only in
some widely scattered areas. I believe that this was due, not to the
cemetery administration doing more work and maintenance in the Christian
cemetery, but because a far greater percentage of those interned in the
Christian cemetery, still hve relatives living in Chernivtsi or the Ukraine.
The current population of greater Chernivtsi is above 200 000, of those only
about 1400 are Jewish.
