Arthur Rindner has written: "Thanks you for your observation, but there is problem with your conclusion."
Yesterday, I wrote Arthur a long explanation of why I believe the photo as presented was not entirely as he thought. Without going into the full explanation, I believe that we are both correct. The photo of Adolf Blond was taken around 1900 where he appears to be about age 6-8 years old, as do all of the boys in the back row of this photo. I have found supporting sources to verify the clothing they are wearing is appropriate for 1900. However, based on clothing clues of the teacher and the other boys in the photo, there is strong evidence that the balance of the photo was taken at a later date and manipulated by the photographer. Just one example of this can be seen on the boy three rows up from the bottom, the third boy from the left. He is wearing a belted Norfolk-style jacket with open collared shirt. In researching this jacket, I found that 1900 was too early for this particular combination of shirt and jacket (no earlier than the 1910s) and found a photo of a boy in 1933 wearing this exact style. In addition, the boy just to his right is posed facing the other direction. It is very likely that this boy was not present when the photo was taken and that a separate photo of him was added to this photo. There are numerous other clues in this photo that point to a later date for the first three rows of boys, including what the top row of boys are standing on since the steps to the right seem to end before the top row. Are they standing on bleechers or a stage of some sort? Close inspection just reveals more inconsistencies. However, I am always open to learning new ideas about photos and if someone on this list has a relative in this photo and verifying documentation of that relative's birthdate to verify the date of this photo, I'd be happy to hear from you. Photo dating is an art and a science. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like more information.
Best to all,
Ava Cohn
