Moldova: Army Enlists Onions and Garlic to Ward Off Swine Flu

The Moldovan Army is issuing garlic and onions to help its soldiers ward off
a growing epidemic of swine flu in Eastern Europe, The Associated Press
reported Thursday. The chief medical officer for the Defense Ministry, Col.
Sergiu Vasislita, was quoted as saying each soldier would get the equivalent
of one small onion and two garlic cloves added to his diet as an
immune-system boost. Moldova has about 6,500 troops.
Onions and garlic are frequently credited with curative powers in folk
medicine, but it is rare that they get official endorsement. A former South
African health minister, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, said garlic, lemons and
beetroot could delay the onset of AIDS. Late Thursday, The Romanian Times
reported that Romania would give Moldova 400,000 doses of swine flu vaccine.
