In answer to Hardy's Email titled: "Re: Rumanian Moslem mass graves":
I think that I now have a reasonable idea of what the boundaries of the
Jewish cemetery on Zelena street (previously known in Romanian as "Strada
Cimitirului" have been since its establishment in 1866.
Initially the cemetery was relatively small and included only the section
north of the main path , as you enter the cemetery from the gate on Zelena
street. This is evident both from the map Hardy sent us, accessible through

As well as shown on the "Stadtplan von Czernowitz" of 1941.
I am not sure when the southern part of the Jewish cemetery started to be
used. We would need to check the gravestones to see which the earliest
burials in that area are.
Bruce Reisch believes that the new numbering system of the cemetery
sections, areas versus Parcels, was started in 1963.
Quite possibly, that is when the cemetery was enlarged both southward as
well as northward.
This would also explain the commercial building which seems to be within the
cemetery boundaries in current area #3.
Certainly it is comforting to know that the cemetery expanded, rather than
that parts of it were sold or given to commercial concerns.
