One simple way to do this job would be to bore a hole, or holes in
each of those cut saplings (a large wood auger would do); pour
gasoline in the hole and let it soak into the wood, and then light it.
It basically smolders for days but doesn't flame. Eventually it should
allow you to easily dig what's left apart with a crowbar to ground
level. I've used t his method on very large stumps and it work quite
well. Should be easy with something the size of the saplings shown in
the picture. Of course it's not a very 'green' method, but it does
seem to work.
