His daughter sent me some of her father's recollection of his life and of
the Jews he knew from Czernowitz. Here it is:
"Ladislaus PLACH family in Czernowitz (Cernauti):
Ladislaus was born 1880 in Solka, married in Czernowitz 1918 to Petronella
who was born 1898 in Czernowitz to Joseph Mraczek and Maria nee Smolnicka.
Ladislaus Plach had 4 children, Jadwiga (Hedwig) 1921, Antonia 1923, Joseph
(Juziu) 1925 (in school photo 1935 Volksschule), Carol (Karl, Karol, Lolo)
1927 (Kathleen’s father).
Resided in Flur Gasse 10 (Strada Jeremia Movila 10) Czernowitz, (Cernauti).
Orchard and some hectares of land. Two kilometers to the town centre.
In 1938 Ladislaus retired as Court Clerk (Gerichtsbeamte), rented out the
house in Flurgasse and the whole family moved to the old Mraczek family
house in Gerber Strasse (Strada Tabacarilor 1) off the Bahnhof Strasse ,
now, under Ukraine, called Mozart Place.
The family moved to Germany in 1940, during the occupation by communist
Russia.
When facing the old and new (2 storey) Mraczek buildings (Gerber Strasse),
to the right as neighbours were Weissman's bakery (2 storey) and large old
metal business, to the left (cannot recall name) a 2 storey building with
groundfloor as restaurant (a ‘karczma’ in Polish – tavern?) run (owned??) by
Jewish people and top floor with four or six apartments let. All these
neighbours were Jewish. The Weissmans were quite a large family apparently
but he can’t recall much more.
Mraczek's oldest son Johann (Jaziu), was also a very successful blacksmith
like his father. Had his business in Dreifaltigheits Gasse (Strada Sfantei
Treimi) near Springbrunnen Platz (Fantanei) and reputed to know and service
most Jewish fiaker owners in Czernowitz".
I'll send along more material as I get it.
