Dear All,

A few days ago, I sent this list a letter, in which I asked for
volunteers to carry out some practical tasks,
which would be helpful in restoring the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery. I
wrote that letter while angry
over being given advice which I knew of no way to carry out and
because from time to time I become
frightened by the enormous task ahead of us. It was mostly a
sarcastic letter and I would like to apologize
for writing it. At the same time, I cannot help thinking of other
worthwhile projects, which as people
who are interested in preserving the Jewish heritage of
Czernowitz/Chernivtsi we should attempt to carry out.

Jewish synagogues in Romania, Hungary and other countries are being
restored and then used as museums.
The "Tempel" in Czernowitz deserves to be restored, just as much as
smaller synagogues in smaller towns.
Chernivtsi's Jewish population is too small to need such a large
prayer house, but the building could house
a Jewish museum, a Holocaust museum, a regional museum or be given to
the university as a large auditorium.
It could be converted to a conference center, or some other
respectable and appropriate use.

The Tempel building was intentionally set on fire in July 1941. It
was not accidentally damaged during fighting.
Would someone please volunteer to investigate whether under
international agreements, those who set it on fire
are responsible for the building's restoration?

Mimi Taylor
