Mimi....As far as I know, nobody has paid for synagogue restorations in
Romania on a national level. The only one that is having serious work done is
the one being restored by the Eminescu Foundation...i assume you saw my
email after the recent lecture at the Romanian Embassy. The lecturer
specifically said that some local councils, town halls etc were using some of
the abandoned buildings....but that is all. Cornel PS .What would
be interesting is who actually currently owns the Tempel building....the
municipality,the cinema people.......who?????

Thank you Berti, for answering my question so promptly.
I believe that the first question which needs to be answered, is:
WHO SET THE TEMPEL BUILDING ON FIRE?
Was it a German SS unit, or was it Romanian soldiers?
Next: Under international law, if it was both together, who is responsible?
I am aware of the work of the Jewish Claims Conference, also of accusations
which have been made against it. In this case, we are not talking about
restitution of private property, even if we were sure that it was German SS
units who set the building on fire. I think that the restitution money
should not go into a general fund, but be used directly to restore the
"Tempel" building.
I ask and hope that some members of the list will undertake to do
the necessary research to determine whether German or Romanian forces were
responsible for the burning of the "Tempel". Once this is known definitely,
more research will need to be done to decide what the best means would be,
to get the responsible country to undertake the restoration of the building.
The JCC has an agreement only with Germany, not with Romania and as far
as I know, does not directly undertake the restoration of old synagogues.
I do not know, who paid for the restoration of the old synagogues in the
various Romanian towns, could someone research this as well?
Mimi
