Subject: [Cz-L] Needed: corrections to the text for the information board at
the entrance to the cemetery.
Dear All,
As I wrote to you earlier, Julia Myasyshcheva, the head of SVIT Ukraine,
wants to put up a large sign-board near the entrance to the cemetery, on
which she will have a map of the cemetery and some general information:
She is unsure of some of the historical facts and figures, the spelling of
some of the names to be mentioned and additional personalities to be named.
I hope that at least some of you, either know the correct facts, are willing
to look them up or ask friends and relatives who may know and send me
the information.
Here the current draft of the inscription:

³Mirror of history preserve the Jewish cemetery of Chernivtsi.²
The Jewish cemetery of Chernivtsi was established by decision of the
municipality in the year 1866. The original idea of architect Relli was to
design the cemetery as a garden-park complex. The size of the cemetery is
about 14 hectares and consists of 137 rectangles, which together form one
continuous closed complex.
About 100 000 Chernivtsi citizens are buried in the cemetery, among them;
former mayor of the city, Eduard Reiss, Yiddish poet and writer Eliezer
Steinbarg, chief Rabbis, Igel and Marks, parliamentary deputies, city
council members and politicians Benno Straucher, Max Fokschaner, Josef
Steiner and Saul Leib Steinmetz, philanthropists Kislinger and Tittinger,
public activists Kampelmacher and many other people, who made significant
contributions to the political, economic, cultural and public life of
Chernivtsi.
The monuments and tomb stones at the cemetery are in a remarkable diversity
of forms, styles and shapes. There are stele, sarcophagi, mausoleums and
obelisks. Ornaments on the monuments represent traditional Jewish cemetery
symbols, as well as elements of Ukrainian and Jewish folk art. Some of the
tombstones are the creations of the famous modern sculptor Bernard Reder.
The ceremonial synagogue at the entrance to the cemetery, was erected in
1905 according to the design of architect Josef Fuenkeln and financed by
the Jewish community. The synagogue consisted of 4 rooms: a ceremonial
hall, mortuary, ritual shop and office.
Since 1995, by the decision of the Chernivtsi city council, the cemetery is
part of the historic-cultural reserve ³Cemeteries at Zelena St.²
At present, the Jewish cemetery of Chernivtsi is one of the biggest
preserved old Jewish cemeteries in Central and Eastern Europe.
It is a monument to, and reminder of, the formerly large Jewish community
of the city and its role in the history of the city.

Please send me corrections, information, advice. Etc..
