Nigel,
Pepi - in Bukovina this name was short for Perla, while in more southerly R=
omanina it seems to have been used as a nickname for Josephina. Many, many=
people went by their 'second' name, if they had two first names i.e. - Yo'=
el Shlame was called Shlame by everyone who knew him in the town, Chana D'v=
ora was Dora, Chaim Anchel was Adolf etc.=20
Also the diminuative "le" was added to names - resulting in Moshele, Yosele=
, Mendele, Ettele, Adele. Another pattern was chopping off the first sylla=
ble and paring down the rest of the name and adding a vowel [I don't know h=
ow the vowel as determined] Emmanuel - Manu, Jacob - Kubi, Meshulem - Shilu=
, etc.
I have quite a list for decoding people & relationships in my family.
Regards,
Shellie Wiener
