Earlier this summer, there was correspondence to the list,
Which mentioned the possibility that the bodies interred in old graves,
might be exhumed and the gravesites sold to those who would like to be
buried in these graves. While in Chernivtsi, I asked both Anzhela Nikolaeva
and Lev Kleyman whether this was allowed. I was assured that while graves
in the Christian cemetery which are neglected, may be sold, such a practice
is strictly forbidden in the Jewish cemetery. In the Jewish cemetery no
graves are allowed to be exhumed. Furthermore, new graves are allowed
to be dug next to old graves, only if the person to be buried has close
relatives buried in the immediate vicinity. As Christian and I observed,
this occasionally leads to new graves being dug on what are meant to be
paths between the areas.
