Dear Czernowitzers,
First of all, I would like to thank all of you for the great work you are doing.
I've been following the list for some time now but never had the
chance to send a message.
Please let me introduce myself and tell you a little bit about my family.
My name is Noam Silberberg. My grandmother, Edith WIEGLER, was born in
the suburb of Klokuczka in 1922. Her parents were Leon WIEGLER and
Rahcel Lea HECHT. Edith had a sister, Gizela (born 1904 and married
Josel Rosenzweig), and two more brothers, Hersz(Heinrich) and Yakov
(twins, born 1908). Edith was a student at the LF2 school on
landhausgasse.
Her grandfather, Meir HECHT, was born in 1859 and died in Czernowitz in 1947.
Her sister, Gizela, married Josel Rosenzweig and had two children:
Karl and Martha.
Other relatives of my grandmother in Czernowitz were Abraham and
Regina WITTNER and their three sons: Norbert, Samuel and Eli.
My grandfther, Nachman NEUMAN, was born in Novoselytsa in 1912. His
family moved to Czernowitz when he was 6. His father, Hersz NEUMAN,
owned a fabric store in the Mehlplatz. It was called Neuman&Karp (or
Karp&Neuman).
The reason I am sending this message is that I am now in Czernowitz
for the first time. I tried to find my grandmother's house but with no
luck. As you may know, Klokuczka once had only one street with more
than 900 houses. My grandmother lived in house number 689. After WWII
(or perhaps WWI?) Klokuczka was divided into several streets and the
house numbers were changed. No one in the archives could tell me how
to find the current address of my grandmother's house. I also tried
speaking to some of the older people in Klokuczka but they too could
not help me.
Do any of you know a way to find the current addresses of old house
numbers in Klokuczka?
I would also like to know if the names I mentioned sound familiar to anyone.
Thank you for your help,
Noam.
