Dear all,

The secret police GPU was the forerunner of the well known NKVD. GPU stands
for Gossoodarstvennoye Politicheskoye Upravlenye ; in English: State
Political Directorate. Thye Czernowitzer office of the GPU was in the
Herrengasse 13. The jail and the interrogation center was on the
Austriaplatz. It later became the KGB and nowadays it is called FSB. All
of them dealing with the same secret service activities ("State Security").
