I was just contacted by a relative I didn't know existed -- the great-granddaughter of Coyne Kluger, my grandfather Baruch Kluger's cousin, both of Czernowitz and Radautz. (all with umlaut)
I learned that Coyne Kluger, who was born between 1860 and 1880, married Moshe Rosner and had 8 sons and 1 daughter. The family was forced to escape into the Carpathians, and Coyne later returned to Czernowitz/Radautz without her husband. She changed her name back to Kluger,
and ran a tavern to support her nine children.
(Coyna Kluger's children:
Carl Kluger was a Jewish hospital administrator in Chenovich. Had 3
children Anna (Mitzi) who married Zisu Marder & had one son Charles. Michael
Kluger who had 2 children Reuben & Lilly. Fritz who married Erica and had 1
daughter Rachel. All moved to USA.
Shalom married 1st wife who dies shortly after having 1st child Max Kluger,
later married Leah Kluger and had another son Fabian Kluger who moved to
Montreal Canada. Fabian Kluger married Eleanora Kluger and had 3 children
Helene, Daniel & Hannah & moved to NY, USA
Fritz Kluger who married and had 1 daughter Taia. Had false papers as a
Christian & had a import textile machinary business & stayed in Romania.
Taia married Alex Peretz and had one daughter Rhoda and lived in NJ, USA.
Idle Kluger, oldest son of Coyne & Moshe was gored to death by a bull. He had one
son Adolph who was taken from a camp in the Ukraine
because he was able to drive a tank. Adolf moved to Israel after the war.)
I'd love to know something about Coyne's tavern, about how that would have fit in as a custom -- a Jewish mother running a tavern.
Maybe they even served mamaliga....
