You are looking at the corner Armeniergasse ( running up) and Russischegasse
to the right.
At this corner ,beneath the eagle 'was a grocery shop.
You went down a few steps an there you were.
Hutschnecker ,the owner ,wore a greasy old raincoat that once had been
grey.
Now it was of a dubious color , because of the handling of herrings
,laddled out from a barrel and packed in old newspapers.
Oily, smelly herrings.
He also had Elka butter and Milka chocolate , pickled cucumbers ,
oil ,
candles,
kerosene , cones of salt and sugar and brown Kandelzucker ,which came in
sticks
and was very useful in curing whooping-cough .
You could also buy Hamsi and halva , pepper , cigarettes and
Emmentaler cheese.
If you had no money you could buy on credit - Hutschnecker would write
it down
in that old note-book with oily covers on his desk.
He was not very strict on payments. If the widow from Pizelligasse was
overdue
in payment he woudn't press.( She had 4 orphans to feed.)
He was never shaved and had golden teeth.
Also a golden heart.
