To add to Edgar Hauster's mail, a significant number of Jews (many
thousands) left Czernowitz via Siret in April/May 1945. I was one of those. We
reached the border on May 9-th, the Soviets had closed it because of Victory
Day, on May 10-th the Romanians closed it (Zece Mai), as a result ,we had to
sleep in some peasant shack for two nights, and we finally left the
Worker's Paradise on May 11-th, (you can see where my political leanings are).
As for Hardy Breier's question, it was unfortunately true. Many Jews
living in the "Regat" especially those originating from Bessarabia (many were
our friends), believing a very adroit Soviet propaganda, left for the Soviet
Union. Some were communists, many were scared (and justly so) of what
looked to be like a somber future in Romania, yet most of them regretted it
bitterly afterwards.
This migration was one of the phony reasons the Antonescu regime gave for
our subsequent deportation to Transnistria,
