[Cz-L] A conundrum re Transnistria

One of my aunt's (and her husband) came to live with my family after the
War. Both had been deported from Czernowitz to Transnistria and both had
numbers tatooed on their forearms. As far as I know they were not in any
of the camps in Poland and it is my understanding that tatoos were not
used in Transnistira.

Can anyone offer an explanation?
