Dear all,
does anyone have information about the Jewish Cemetery in Zastavna - I am worried about rumours which have come via my great-aunt, only remaining member of our family from Zastavna, now aged 88 and living in Tel Aviv - who has heard these rumours about a new mall / playing ground (or similar) having been built on the site of the cemetery.
I am trying to find out if this is true - and even if it is not, I want to understand if there is any possibility to do something about this cemetery so as to avoid such situations in the future.
My great-grandfather Abraham Ber TAMLER was buried in Zastavna and according to my great-aunt (his daughter) had an important grave built by the community to its one-time president; his parents and mother in law were also buried there; possibly other family members as well. From what we know, the gravestones have all been stolen and used by local peasants to pave their courtyards. Apparently there are a few stones left, none in their original place.
I did find this: http://www.iajgs.org/cemetery/ukraine/zastavna.html but there are only telephone numbers from someone in Czernowitz and I do not speak any Russian - and the information seems to be old (the interview mentioned there is from 1995). In a US survey of 2005 (http://www.heritageabroad.gov/reports/doc/survey_ukraine_2005.pdf), Zastavna cemetery is mentioned with 1-20 gravestones, a continuous fence, no gate, no signs, no markers. And that is about all I found.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or help you might be able to offer.
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards,
Dana Dimitriu
