When in June 1940 the Soviets arrived ,it was a low key affair.
Some army trucks with soldiers passed through the streets.
At noon the" Mosfilm" teams arrived with the cameras for the
taking of the newsreel of " Czernowitz welcomes the Red Army".
Before this ,commissars passed through the main streets summoning the
population to come and welcome the Soviet entry.
Flowers were distributed and money too. People were rehearsed and
had to smile and show their joy throwing flowers at the soldiers.
The trucks with soldiers passed the streets again for the Mosfilm
cameras.
This was then shown at all the cinemas :" Overjoyed Czernowitz
population welcomes
the liberating Red Army ".
We soon learned the first 2 russian words : Zawtra ( tomorrow) and
budyet ( there will be).
When asked when essentials will again be available (food and others)
the Soviet soldiers
replied : "Zawtra budyet ".
Later we learned many more words.
And then we learned not to make jokes about comrade Stalin's
mustache.

Thank you for these very interesting recollections of the Soviet era. I
attach a photo from a Soviet newspaper reproduced in P.R. Magocsi, "Ukraine:
An Illustrated History" of the Red Army being welcomed in Cernauti, June
1940.
