In the East of Europe ,over the mountains of the darkness , strange habits
ruled.
Brought here from Asia by nomad tribes (?) they soon caught roots .
The Jews followed suit. I speak of the professional mourners.
During the month of Elul, before New Year ,was their high season .
They would meet you at the cemetery gate , offering their wailing skills.
Voice volume was a matter of consideration - as their wails must reach
heaven for effectiveness.
Extras were offered : Falling prostrate on the graves or pulling of
hairs.
The family would stand by with stern faces
PS.
As the cemetery of our concern will soon be operational there are
positions to be offered in this regard.
Candidates must be : Female , past middle age , sad faced, having a
strong penetrating voices.
( Today you can hire portable speaker systems with MP4 recordings
of professional lamenters - but it is not the same)
