Hardy...in the fencing societies they did use rapiers...but not in the
Burschenschaften. The fencing lot did not encourage duels but while not
legal the Burschenschaft looked the other way.A rapier is a stabbing weapon
if used in earnest and was not the recommended way to aquire a
Schmiss..instead of a cut that resulted in a good scar you were more likely
to have a hole in your cheek. Not the purpose of the exercise! If you go on
Google and put in "Student dueling societies in Austria-Hungary" and then go
to the 3rd or 4th entry "Men and Violence" by Ute Frevent you will read a
very good dissertation which shows the progression from rapiers used in
earnest to sabers. Finally,I would rather use an AK-47 with fixed
bayonet...more choice of winning method! Cornel

Cornel ,
The weapon used in the Mensur ,academic fencing ,was
the Korbschlaeger which was a Degen of the rapier family of weapons.
Next time you challenge me it will end in a duel at Horecea.
Be it cutting , pointed or saw - edge blade.
Hardy
