We and the Rumanian language.

After WW1 Bukowina became Rumanian and the authorities were doing
all it could to Romanize us.
To obtain Rumanian citizenship ,without which state jobs were not
achievable,
one had to pass Rumanian language tests which for grown-ups was not easy.
Yiddish speaking on the streets was forbidden.
As Jews did most of the speaking on the street , in Yiddish and loudly
too
this was a ruling hard to abide.
So they took Rumanian language courses in the evenings.
In the morning they tried to clarify points of grammar with us ,the
younger generation ,
who were meant to be more initiated (remember Eccentric Club ).
I tried to explain my mother that the verb "to have '' in Rumanian in
the past tense was
" Eu am avut " and not " Ich hab a Wut " which in German meant I am in a
rage.
And so it went : Ich hab a Wut,
                                Du hast a Wut,
                                Er hat a Wut.
Otherwise Rumanian is a beautiful language - latin basis with Turkish ,
Slavonic and Gypsy
    influences.
