To supplement Mimi's info on volunteering at the cemetery this summer: I
volunteered thru Volunteers for Peace in 2008. I have participated in seven
different volunteer projects in different countries thru VFP and find them
to be a very reputable organization. I am not familiar with SCI US. VFP is
part of a network of organizations internationally. Each one sponsors
projects in its own country, and sends people abroad to volunteer in other
countries. In general, people volunteer through the organization in their
own country. It seems that there is more than one organization in the US.

These organizations' primary emphasis is on fostering international
understanding. They serve a largely young population, but most programs
accept people of any age. I am in my 50's. This is not the kind of
organization that takes you there.

You are responsible for your own transportation arrangements and cost. They
provide room and board, which is usually pretty rudimentary, often sleeping
bags on the floor. The volunteers take turns cooking for the group. My group
in Cz. stayed in a residential school that was vacant for the summer, in
dorm like accommodations. (actually one of the more "luxurious" living
situations of the projects I've participated in.) I don't believe they
stayed at the same place last summer.

This is a wonderful experience if you have an adventurous spirit and don't
mind rustic conditions.

If you want any more information about my experiences, please let me know.
